The Sliding Scale of Dysfuntion

Tuesday, June 6, 2023

There are many types of family structures.  What one might deem “normal” could be considered borderline dysfunctional to another.  For example, our family used to play a family bonding game around dinnertime.  It was like a game of musical chairs.  Before eating dinner, we would set up three chairs around our dinner table.  Then the four of us would walk around the table while “Pop Goes the Weasel” played in the background.  When the music stopped, the family member who didn’t make it to a chair would have to eat standing up.  This ritual was fun and amusing to me until my two daughters got older and faster.  Then, after standing for many consecutive meals, I didn’t enjoy the game quite so much.  We took the fourth chair out of storage shortly after that, and all sat at the table together.
